Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson Buy Here

This was a break from my normal spicy fantasy, focusing more on science fiction. My husband bought this for me so I stuck with it, though it took a while for me to be invested. It has a Princess Bride type of tone and vibe, and I'm not part of that cult following. I also have not read anything else in the Sanderson universe, and I think if you have, it would be easier to get into the world?? Overall, by halfway in I was enjoying the world and the character's journey enough to finish the book.

Fourth Wing, Iron Flame & Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros Buy Here

I re-read the first two before Onyx Storm was released. I still find Fourth Wing to have something incredibly addictive about it that I find both delicious and slightly infuriating because I can't quite figure out why I feel that way??!?! I read maybe a couple books a year before picking up Fourth Wing in summer of 2023, then devoured the book in two days, recommended it to all my friends, and dove into the romantasy genre with a vengeance. I credit this book with helping me find joy in reading again.

That said, and I realize this is a mildly unpopular opinion, I think Onyx Storm was filler and world building and maybe not altogether progressing the plot very much?? We find out some long-awaited details about the characters, but overall plot wise this felt a bit drawn out for the payoff, which didn't feel like a resolution. That said, I can definitely see Yarros publishing this with the intention of taking a long gap between this and book four (if it's any less than two years I would be surprised). There's enough information on Navarre and the slew of new characters to give readers something to ponder about for a couple years.
